Commander’s Corner:

I have been working these past several months with your Post Executive Committee and Building Corporation to address present & future needs at Berryhill Post 165. I will soon be meeting with our Long Range Planning Committee (Nels Cronkright, Wilson Coomer, Steve Tracy and myself) to look at future needs of our membership. I will also be naming chairpersons and staffing committees for the balance of the year. If you are interested in serving on a committee at Berryhill Post 165 please call Adjutant Pat Hanley at (989)488-2025. I will also be having Hanley call our newer members, from all "war eras", with the intention of directly asking for your assistance in this matter of committee work as well as for the express intention of boosting meeting attendance.

Thank you again for re-electing me to be your Commander. Please consider helping me to serve Berryhill Post 165, The American Legion to the best of my ability.

Chuck Kaminski (989) 662-0263

VA HOSPITAL BINGO

In 2008, Berryhill Legion members have been to the VA hospital in Saginaw this year in January, March, April & June to hold a bingo for the infirmed. I’ve had the honor to go twice this year on this excursion. To see the looks on the faces of those hospitalized and to hear their words of appreciation for our time spent with them, is something you should experience.

The Auxiliary went to the hospital in May & will be going again on Wednesday, September 17. Call Deb Northrup at (989) 915-9479 for time & commitment.

If you are interested in helping with VA hospital bingo in 2009 please call Steve Tracy at 989-835-3733, as we will begin assembling teams and setting dates.

RE/MAX Balloon Festival this year (September 12-14) will be an occasion for honoring our troops, especially those who have served in the Gulf hostilities since August 2, 1990 to the present date.

You have no doubt read the articles in the Midland Daily News concerning this event & the quite impressive CNN Warrior One Hummer that was used by embedded CNN journalists in 2003 to cover the war in Iraq. It has been overhauled and customized and will be shown at the balloon festival with medallions being sold to further support Fisher House (all proceeds to wounded warriors and the families during convalescence).

Wayne Crosby & Pat Devereaux of RE/MAX of Midland addressed the membership at the August 6 regular meeting concerning RE/MAX annual fall balloon festival. Crosby asked the membership to assist RE/MAX in guarding this special Hummer that RE/MAX Co-Founders Gail and Dave Liniger purchased for $1 million dollars, all proceeds to Fisher House.

Steve Tracy moved that our post provide volunteers to guard from 1 pm to 10 pm on Saturday, September 12, at the fairgrounds. Chuck Kaminski second. Passed unanimous. Other organizations will be taking other shifts.

If you would like to represent Berryhill Post 165 in this support of our wounded troops please call Steve Tracy at (989) 835-3733. Call now, as the list is being assembled.

See "CNN Warrior One Hummer" at RE/MAX Balloon Festival, September 12-14, 2008.

Bingo at the American Legion.

In December we will be at the end of our first year of rotating bingo teams at Berryhill. For over 15 years it used to be that Bob & Vi Walker, Margie Kelly, Eva Havens, Grace Chase, Kim Thousand, Pauline Robinson, Kay & Larry Bishop & some others carried the load every week.

We currently have 32 members on a 4 week rotation. IF YOU WOULD VOLUNTEER, MAYBE WE COULD MOVE THAT ROTATION TO EVERY 8 WEEKS. Ambitious aren’t I, well if you don’t think big and you don’t ask, then no one is going to know that you need help.

Call Steve Tracy at (989) 835-3733 or Pat Hanley at (989) 488-2025 to volunteer to work bingo at Berryhill Post 165.
