Bingo at the American Legion.

As of the end of December 2008 we will be needing a NEW 4TH bingo team!

We are looking for a chairperson, 2 callers & 2 floor workers to commit to working one Monday night per month for one year. Pat Hanley will be making calls to Vietnam, Lebanon/Grenada, Panama & "Gulf War to cessation of hostilities as determined by the U.S. government" Legionnaires will be being made in the next month requesting volunteers.

Dollars raised through bingo greatly assist Berryhill in its services to veterans.

Call Past Commander Steve Tracy at (989) 835-3733 or Adjutant Pat Hanley at (989) 488-2025 to volunteer to work bingo at Berryhill Post 165.

From The Son's Of The American Legion - Squadron #0165

The SAL held our annual harvest dinner on Saturday, the 11th of October. We had 230 guests come and enjoy the meal we had prepared. This was an increase by 32 people over last year, and also a record high for this event.  We would like to thank all who came to eat, and those who helped with the preparation and dinner. This event would not be possible to do without the members who volunteer their time and talents.

We would also like to thank Harry Loiselle and Dave Sawyer, who came up from Post 48, in Grand Ledge, to help cook the turkeys.

The drawing for our Annual Raffle is on Friday, October 31st at 8:30 p.m., during the "Halloween Party".  Tickets are still available at the bar and will be on sale until 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Mike Brandt – SAL Commander

Brian Cashin – Adjutant/Finance Officer

Legionnaire Constitution & By-Laws to be updated

On Sunday, October 12, Berryhill Legionnaires & Long Range Planning Committee members Willie Coomer, Nels Cronkright, Chuck Kaminski & Steve Tracy met for the first time in several years. From that meeting came an assignment to form a committee to update Berryhill’s Legionnaire Constitution & By-Laws. Further action will be recommended by Long Range Planning Committee in early 2009 concerning other long term planning warranting attention by the Post.

On Wednesday, October 29, Constitution & By-Laws committee members Ross Ahlich, John Evans, Pat Hanley, Chuck Kaminski & Steve Tracy started a review of the Constitution & By-Laws for updating. Following the current By-Law "Article XVII – Amendments" this committee expects to be preparing & reading at two upcoming regular meetings & making written notice to all Legion members fourteen days prior to such meeting at which proposed amendment(s) will be voted upon. Target dates are to be complete with this effort by early 2009.

If you have questions please call Pat Hanley, Adjutant at (989)488-2025, or speak to any of the aforementioned Legionnaires.

HOW DO THOSE TABLE TOP & ENTRANCE SIGNS OF FUTURE POST ACTIVITIES GET INFORMATION?

Do you have a Legion event or fundraiser planned?

Would you like the information posted on the table tents and door posters? If so, please contact me at djcashin@gmail.com or 839-0107 as soon as you have all of the details for the event.

I would be more than happy to get the information posted as soon as room is available. The farther in advance I get the information the better. Please include the event, date, time, cost (if any), and any other important detail. If it's a meal, be specific on the menu and cost, if it's a fundraiser, tell me what, or who it's for, etc. The more details I get, the more information will be available for anyone interested in attending the event.

I'm usually at the Post on Friday's and try to replace the new signs then. If you have an event you would like posted, please get the information to me by Wednesday. If there are events that have passed, and I have room, I will get the new one's made and at the Post right away. If there isn't room, I'll get it posted as soon as possible.

    Thank You,

Debbie Cashin – The American Legion Auxiliary

    PROCEEDS TO BENEFIT OUR VETERANS

    From The American Legion website

The American Legion’s National Commission on Children & Youth is very concerned about the welfare of our nation’s youth. This brochure was designed to help you and your child keep trick-or-treat safety in mind during this Halloween season.

Every year around October 31, childrens’ fantasies come true. They look forward to dressing-up as their favorite character and knocking on neighbor’s doors to ask the age-old question "Trick or Treat?" Not too surprisingly, they usually get what they want – a bag full of sweets and goodies. However, even children’s fantasies can sour if parents and children do not properly prepare for a safe night. Please take the time to review the safety tips and suggestions in this brochure and share them with your child. Together, you and your child can make Halloween a fun and safe night.

As long as Halloween activities are sponsored and promoted in our various communities, the National Commission on Children & Youth believes children and parents should know how to make this observance as safe as possible. Such concern should not be interpreted as an endorsement or approval of Halloween as an annual event.

    Halloween Safety Tips

All children should know their phone number and address and the following safety tips.

    • A responsible adult should always accompany children.

    • Costumes should be light in color to aid visibility, be fire resistant, and not pose a tripping hazard.

    • Use make-up instead of vision-blocking masks.

    • Always use sidewalks and obey traffic signals.

    • Always cross the street at corners. Never cross the street between parked cars.

    • Never go into a house for any reason.

    • Never go with somebody without prior parental permission.

    • Only accept sealed and wrapped treats.

    • Always wait until adult checks all treats at home before eating.

    • Dial 911 for emergencies, or dial 0 for an operator.

    • Have Fun and Be Safe!
